What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle, yet powerful Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It is non-invasive and can be used alongside medical or psychological treatment as well as other complementary therapies.
Reiki Origins
Reiki was re-discovered by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. He treated countless patients successfully, taught Reiki to over 2000 people and initiated 16 teachers. After his death, his students continued to give Reiki treatments and to teach it to others. By the 1990s, it was estimated that over 1million people had been initiated to teach and treat Reiki.
Who can benefit from treatment?
Reiki has been used to treat many types of serious illness such as cancers, HIV and AIDs, Multiple Sclerosis and ME, heart disease and high blood pressure.
Reiki can shorten healing time after surgery and can help with pain control and recovery from physical injury.
It is effective in treating allergies and skin complaints as well as stress-related conditions, both physical and psychological.
Reiki is also used in conjunction with psychotherapy to improve the healing of emotional trauma, irrational fears, anxiety and insomnia.
Where is it practised?
As conventional medicine begins to recognise the benefit of using complementary therapies to help treat clients and patients in a holistic way, Reiki is being used in integrative health clinics, hospitals, occupational health units, drug rehabilitation centres amongst others.
What to expect from a treatment?
A treatment is carried out with the client fully clothed, lying down or sitting down. The practitioner places their hands in a series of positions, on or over the body.
The client’s system automatically draws in as much Reiki as is needed, using it in whatever way is most appropriate at the time.
Reiki may be felt as a flow of vibrations moving up and down the body, mild, tingling warmth, coolness, other sensations or nothing at all. Each clients experience will be unique to that individual.
Immediately after a treatment, clients usually feel deeply relaxed, a sense of lightness, a decrease in stress and a calm feeling.
Each treatment lasts approximately one hour and an appropriate course of treatments can be discussed and arranged.
How many treatments will be needed?
Although even one session can make a difference, it is usually more effective to have a series of treatments. From experience, I have found initially a course of six treatments once a week, where possible, seems to be the most effective for the client.
At the end of the sixth session, the client and I review what further treatment they may wish to have. Some clients will continue on a once a month basis, some will ask for treatments on an ad-hoc basis and others decide to learn Reiki via the Reiki One course so that they can treat themselves going forward.
